Everybody else in the family gets to be simply delighted about the baby. You are the one who has known him since he was the one being carried out of a hospital, and every sentence that shows up sounds either too large for a card or too much like instruction. There is a second thing happening too, and nobody names it: no one is going to ask how he is doing. The questions all go to his partner and to the baby, which is exactly right, and it leaves the new father holding a phone full of congratulations addressed to somebody else. That gap is what a message from his parents is built to fill. What follows is written from where you are standing — longer messages from Mom and from Dad separately and from the two of you together, short lines that fit inside a card, something for a first grandchild, words for the day you became grandparents yourselves, and a few sentences for the party. It has stayed different ever since and I keep noticing it. Whatever these first weeks turn out to be, my phone is on. I love you more than I have ever managed to say in one sitting, and I am not going to try to fix that today.

2
I held you exactly the way you were holding him this morning. Same arm, same worried face. I sat out in the hallway for a while afterward and I am not going to explain why, because you already know. Congratulations, sweetheart. I could not be happier for the three of you.

3
There is a long list of things I want to tell you and I am telling you none of them. You will find them out in your own order, the way everybody does. What I will say is this: you have a mother who will drive down on four hours’ notice and go home the minute you want your house back. Say the word in either direction.

4
The best part of today is not the baby, and I hope you will forgive me for that. The best part is watching you turn into somebody new in a single afternoon while staying entirely the person I have known your whole life. I am so proud of you I cannot see straight. Enjoy every bit of this.

5
You do not have to call me back. You do not have to send pictures. You do not have to keep anybody updated, me included, and if I ever start acting like you do, say so and I will quit. I love you. I am here. That is the whole message and there is nothing in it that needs answering.

6
There is lasagna in your freezer already, which is the only useful thing I know how to do from this distance. You did it. I have been sitting here an hour trying to come up with something better than that and there is nothing better than that. Congratulations, son. Your mother is crying in the kitchen and I have been out to the garage twice for no reason at all.

2
I want to tell you one thing and then I am going to stop, because we do not do this. When you were about a week old I sat on the back steps at four in the morning and understood, all at once, what my own father had been doing for years without ever mentioning it. You are going to get that morning. I am glad it belongs to you now.

3
Here is my standing offer and there is no expiration on it: anything that needs a truck, anything that needs a ladder, and every errand neither of you has a free hand for right now. That is what I am useful for and I would like to be used. Say the word and I am in the driveway. Congratulations, son.

4
Your grandfather never once told me he was proud of me. I knew it anyway, which is how it worked back then, and I have decided not to run it that way. So, in writing: I am proud of you. I have been for years and never once said it out loud. Now go take care of your family.

5
Nobody is going to ask how you are holding up this week. They will ask about her and about the baby, which is exactly how it should be. So I am asking. How are you doing? Answer whenever you feel like it, or do not answer at all. Either way, I am glad you called me first.

6
You know I would rather do a thing than write about one, so this is short. Welcome to the part of your life where you will never sleep the same way again, and I mean that as good news. And I love you. See you Saturday. I will bring the ladder.

From both of us

1
Your mother and I called each other three times before we could agree on what to put in this card, which should tell you how well we are handling it. Congratulations to you both.

3
The two of us have not stopped talking since your call. About half of it is about the baby and the other half is about you, which is probably not how this is supposed to work. Congratulations, son. We could not be more pleased with the pair of you.

4
One thing we settled before we signed this: whatever your house needs, you tell us plainly and we will not read a single thing into it. We are so glad it is you.

2
We have been parents for a long time. Since last night we are something else as well, and it turns out nobody explains that part either. Whatever it is, we like it. Congratulations to you and to her, and welcome to the newest one.

3
There is a photograph of you at four days old in a drawer in this house. Congratulations, son.

4
Everyone told us how a first grandchild feels and every one of them described it wrong. It is quieter than they said and it runs a great deal deeper. Thank you for it. We are proud of you and we are proud of her, and we do not plan to stop saying so.

5
First for you, first for us, and the last time any of us will be brand new at this. Enjoy the stretch where nobody knows anything. Congratulations. Something happened to us today as well, and neither of us expected it to land this hard.

2
Somewhere around three in the morning your mother said, to nobody in particular, that there is one more of us now. She meant the family. I have not been able to stop thinking about that sentence since. Congratulations, son. You added a person to the world and a chair to this table.

3
Grandma is going to take some getting used to. I have said it out loud maybe six times and it still sounds like it belongs in somebody else’s life. Give me a year. By then I will have said it so often you will be sick of hearing it. Congratulations, honey. We love you.

4
Here is the part nobody warns you about from this end. You spend twenty-some years being the person your kid calls when something breaks, and then one day there is somebody else in the room looking at him that way instead. We saw it happen this morning. It was a good thing to watch. Congratulations, son.

5
People are going to call us grandparents for the rest of your life now, and we have decided we like it. What we would like more is to earn the useful version of the word. Tell us what useful looks like in your house and that is precisely what we will do. Congratulations, son.

A few words to say out loud at the party

1
I will keep this short, because there is a baby in the room and he outranks every one of us. Somebody in this family had an enormous month and it was not me. To my son, who I am prouder of than I have said out loud, and to the newest name on the list. Thank you all for coming.

2
Two sentences and then we eat. This family got one person bigger, and one of the people standing in this room was handed a job nobody ever interviews for. He wanted the job. To him, to her, and to the little one who has slept through almost all of this.

3
Thank you all for coming, and thank you to whoever has been in that kitchen since this morning. I have been given a minute and I have no intention of using all of it. There is a new person here. His father is standing next to me looking exhausted and extremely pleased. That is the whole speech. Glasses up.

4
A short one, since the point of today is the small one rather than the speeches. Welcome to the family. And to his parents: everybody in this room came here on purpose, and not one person is here out of obligation. Remember that in about six weeks. To the three of them.

5
I promised I would not make a thing of this, so this is not a thing, it is an announcement. My son has been somebody’s father since the middle of last month, and I still cannot say that sentence without stopping halfway through it. To him, to her, and to the newest person in the house.

Questions and answers

Everyone is writing to the new mother. Does the new father get a card of his own?

Yes, and put his name on the envelope rather than both of theirs. The flood in the first two weeks goes almost entirely to his partner and to the baby, which is right, and it leaves him holding a phone full of congratulations meant for somebody else. A card addressed to him is not competing with hers; it fills a gap she does not have. Keep it about him — the phone call, the drive home, the fact that he sounded different — rather than about the birth, which he will have recounted forty times. Then send something to her separately, so his card does not read as a household card with her left out. Two envelopes, one trip to the mailbox, and nobody has to interpret anything.

We have never written each other anything. Does a letter from his father come out of nowhere?

It comes out of nowhere, and that is most of its value. In families where the men communicate by errand and by phone calls about the truck, a written page is the strongest signal available precisely because it breaks the pattern, and he will know what it cost to produce. Two things keep it from being uncomfortable. Keep it short — five or six sentences is a full letter in a family like this — and put something concrete at the end, an offer or a date, so he has an ordinary thing to answer instead of having to match the register. Then do not hand it over and wait. Mail it, and never raise it again. A written page that gets referred to afterward stops being a gift and turns into a debt.

Her parents are grandparents too. How do you write without it reading as a claim?

Keep the card entirely inside your own relationship and it cannot read as a claim. The trouble comes from the comparative register — first grandchild, the family name, who he takes after — because each of those quietly puts two sets of grandparents on a scale, and it gets read that way even when nothing of the kind was meant. Write about your son, about your history with him, and about what you are offering. The useful move is not in the card at all: decide between yourselves who visits first, who takes which weekend, and who asks about the holidays, and settle it with the other parents directly rather than through the couple. New parents should not be running that negotiation in their first month.

The timing was hard — he is young, it was not planned, or the year has been rough. What do you leave out?

Leave out the verdict, in both directions. That includes the reassuring one — you will be fine, the two of you can handle this — because a card that delivers a judgment has still delivered a judgment, and the next one could just as easily go the other way. It also includes anything that names the difficulty as difficulty. He knows the circumstances better than you do and does not need them summarized on a day that belongs to him. What is left over is plenty. Say you are glad the baby is here. Say what you think of him as a person, which is a separate subject from how the timing looks. Then make an offer specific enough to be accepted or turned down, and stop there.

Do we sign it Mom and Dad, or Grandma and Grandpa?

Mom and Dad, for this card at least. The first thing he reads from you after becoming a father is the one place where being his parents outranks the new title, and signing it the other way reassigns everybody in a single stroke: he becomes the father, you become the grandparents, and the relationship actually doing the work goes off the page. There will be years of cards signed the other way, most of them addressed to the child. Save it for those. If you want the new word in at all, drop it into the body as an aside rather than the signature — that version reads as amused instead of as staking something.
